The Charles Rivers or Charles or the River Charles as it sometimes called, was originally named the Massachusetts River, by Captain John Smith of Pocahontas fame, after the Massachusetts Tribe that lived in the area. King Charles I decided to change the name to the Charles River. Kings can do that. The Charles River flows about 80 miles from Hopkinton Massachusetts before it empties into Boston Harbor. Over time, sewage, wastewater, and runoff from the towns bordering the Charles would pollute the water.  In the early 1960's, programs were started to help clean up the river.

In 1978, the Charles River Dam was created near the Boston Museum of Science. This dam kept out salt water from the ocean, hence turning the Charles River basin into fresh water. As of 2013, small boats can be used on the Charles River, but swimming without a permit is forbidden.
